Podcasts for Older Generations

If you’re from the older generations, you’ll remember a time when radio was the thing everyone listened to. Now, we have the internet, streaming music, YouTube, movies, Netflix, TV, satellite radio. It’s tough to keep up with what’s going on, and there’s no way you can listen to everything.

If you aren’t familiar with the term, podcasts are like on-demand radio shows. There are podcast shows on every topic you can think of from this year’s election to economics to America to history to language and more.

Just think of a topic, let’s pick the news. Now, this is a broad topic but you’ll be able to narrow down. Do you want world news? US news? Business news?

The beauty of podcasts is that you pick your topic and show, as well as which episodes you are interested in, and that’s what you listen to. You’re not stuck listening to a 1 hour show only because you want to hear 5 minutes from your favorite author. If you want to hear from that author, just search for him in a podcast app and you can find every podcast episode he has ever been on.

How do I get podcasts?

Podcasts are easy to listen to. All you need is either a computer, tablet, or smartphone, you can also use an iPod that is wifi enabled.

If you choose to use a computer, you can usually just Google the podcast you want to listen to and are able to stream the episodes from the website. If you go to a site like This American Life, you will see every episode on there.

If you use a smartphone, tablet, or iPod, you will need to download a podcast app.

Here are a few to try:

Then you just start downloading podcasts!

This is the podcast that has helped bring podcasting into the mainstream. Season 1 followed the host as she dug into a cold case about the murder of a teen. The second season followed the story of Bowe Bergdahl who left his post and was captured by the Taliban.
