Celebrating Grandparents on Sunday, September 7th and everyday

grandparents-quotes-for-facebook-2Sunday, September 7th marks Grandparents Day. While this hallmark holiday is not as predominant as Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, it’s certainly a day to remind your grandparents that you love them and appreciate everything that they do for you. My grandparents split time between Florida in the winter and up north in the summer months. As one of 30+ cousins, it’s sometimes hard to get that one-on-one attention, but at least once a year my grandparents make it a priority to see “just me” so I will drive over to the east coast and enjoy dinner, some shopping time with grandma and maybe even a round of golf. My 87 year old grandpa can still play and will even WALK. Now that’s impressive if you ask me. I feel very fortunate at my age to still have living grandparents, something many of my colleagues and friends don’t have.

So this Sunday, make sure you call your grandparents or make plans to stop in if they live near by. Appreciate the time you have with them as you won’t always have them around. Grandparents are a delightful blend of laughter, caring deed, wonderful stories and never ending love! They are the leaders of the family and the reason you and your aunts, uncles, cousins, parents and siblings are who you are.

What’s your favorite memory with your grandparents or grandchildren? We would love to hear your story!

Thank You!

ImageWow, what an incredible turnout for last night’s Celebrity Bartender Night at Noodles. Just Like Family Home Care presented the evening as a way to raise awareness and funds for local seniors in need. For $20, guests received a drink ticket and wristband for a sushi buffet. $10 went back to Noodles and $10 went to St. Matthews House. For two and a half hours, 16 celebrity bartenders in the medical field poured drinks (in 30 minute shifts) and worked for tips behind the bar. I am not sure what the total count is just yet, but there were at least four tip jars and they were all full and that was amazing to see.

Not only that, but we had a donation box out front to collect new items for our Senior Collection Drive and the box was full! I couldn’t believe how generous everyone wasimage-5

It was a huge success and great event to celebrate Senior Citizens Month and our Senior Collection Drive. Friends of the celebrity bartenders came out to support and we got to meet some new faces! Just Like Family is very passionate about helping the community, especially seniors. We will be collecting NEW items for our Senior Collection Drive through the end of the month so if you have any items you can bring them directly to Just Like Family Home Care or we can send our Concierge Transport Service vehicle to pick up the items.

A HUGE thank you to Noodles, our celebrity bartenders and everyone who came out! I can’t wait to do another event very soon!

Celebrating our Seniors

This May we are celebrating Senior Citizens at Just Like Family Home Care as May is Senior Citizens Month. The history of Senior Citizens Month goes back half of a century.

According to the Administration on Aging, when Older Americans Month was established in 1963, only 17 million living Americans had reached their 65th birthdays. About a third of older Americans lived in poverty and there were few programs to meet their needs. Interest in older Americans and their concerns was growing, however. In April of 1963, President John F. Kennedy’s meeting with the National Council of Senior Citizens served as a prelude to designating May as “Senior Citizens Month.”

Thanks to President Jimmy Carter’s 1980 designation, what was once called Senior Citizens Month, is now called “Older Americans Month,” and has become a tradition.

Historically, Older Americans Month has been a time to acknowledge the contributions of past and current older persons to our country, in particular those who defended our country. Every President since JFK has issued a formal proclamation during or before the month ofMay asking that the entire nation pay tribute in some way to older persons in their communities. Older Americans Month is celebrated across the Coun
try through ceremonies, events, fairs and other such activities.

The older population–persons 65 years or older–numbered 39.6 million in 2009 (the latest year for which data is available). They represented 12.9% of the U.S. population, about one in every eight Americans. By 2030, there will be about 72.1 million older persons, more than twice their number in 2000. People 65+ represented 12.4% of the population in the year 2000 but are expected to grow to be 19% of the population by 2030.

At Just Like FamiImagely, we see the growth first hand and we know many of our local Seniors are in need of more than just caregivers. They need everyday toiletries, clothing, cards and more. Join us Wednesday May 14 from 5-7:30 p.m. for a Celebrity Bartender Night at Noodles Italian Cafe & Sushi Bar in Naples to celebrate Senior Citizens Month. A $20 donation at the door will provide you with a drink ticket and food.

SAVE THE DATE: Celebrity Bartending to Celebrate Senior Citizens

Noodles Italian Café and Sushi Bar, a locally owned restaurant at Mission Plaza in Naples, will host a fundraiser to help support Southwest Florida Seniors in need on Wednesday, May 14, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Just Like Family Home Care, a family-owned home care company servicing seven Southwest Florida counties, is celebrating Senior Citizens Month this May and partnering with Noodles to present a celebrity bartending night. The event is designed to raise awareness of the growing need to help seniors, especially during the summer months.

“Summer is an extremely slow time of year in terms of donations and many of our local non-profits are very low on supplies,” says Nassberg. “People are so generous around the holidays, but our hope is that this Senior Drive will spark giving at a time when it is most needed.”

The cost for one ticket will be $20, and will include a variety of foods, plus one free drink ticket. Tickets for the fundraiser may be purchased at the door. $10 from each ticket and tips raised by the celebrity bartenders will be split between St. Matthews House and Goodlette Arms.

Guests are also asked to bring one new item that can be donated to Just Like Family’s Senior Collection Drive. Throughout the month of May, JLF is collecting items for seniors. Suggested donations include socks, shampoo, pajamas, games, glasses, sweaters, blankets, stamps, wheelchairs, walkers, medical supplies and personal hygiene items.

In June, the donations will be distributed to St. Matthews House and Goodlette Arms, a low income, housing apartment for seniors subsidized by the federal governments HUD.

Celebrating Five Years with Just Like Family

Our slogan at Just Like Family is: “Just Like Family: Where your family is our family, too.” We always say that we treat our customers like family, but it goes hand in hand with our employees and caretakers. As a small business, it’s a challenge to find loyal, reliable employees, which is why Just Like Family feels so blessed to have not one, but two employees celebrating their five year anniversaries with us.

Michelle Krumm: Regional Sales Manager

Michelle Krumm began her Just Like Family career in 2009, working as a Sales Representative prior to being promoted to Regional Sales Manager three years ago. Krumm is proud of how much growth the company has seen in the last five years. Her job is to work directly with sales reps out in the field in Lee and Collier County, working to train them in order to grow the business and expand Just Like Family’s territory to Charlotte County. Her efforts are evident as the company now has 17 employees.

“The possibilities are endless,” says Krumm. “I love working for a smaller company. I love being able to take an idea and run with it. I don’t have to go through the corporate chain, but instead, I can go to Lis and Jacob and the next day the idea can come to life.”

Krumm says it’s easy to come into work everyday when her bosses are her best friends. “That goes a long way because Lis and Jacob are compassionate and loyal. The loyalty we have for one another is hard to find with businesses today.”

On top of that, Krumm says helping people everyday is very rewarding. “This job is different than the sales I’ve done in the past. Here, I’m making a difference in people’s lives. It’s hard when adult children are out of state and can’t see mom and dad on a daily or even monthly basis. You’re that piece that brings everything together for them.”

Alissa Mitchell: Client Relations Manager

When Alissa Mitchell started at Just Like Family in 2009 she never imagined the growth the company would see in just five years. When she started, she did everything from payroll to staffing.  “We were four people. I was excited. Michelle and I started two weeks apart. I remember discussing how we’d like to see the company grow, but it happened so quickly. I can’t believe we have 17 people in this office today,” says Mitchell.

Mitchell says it’s a combination of the people she works with and the clients she has met that has made coming into work for the last five years so rewarding. “The company name says it all. Just Like Family. Lis and Jacob have always been like family to me. Not only that, you grow a bond with the caregivers, the clients and the clients families. It’s huge and that’s what makes this job interesting and fun,” says Mitchell. “It’s something different every day and as we continue to move forward, it’s about being a part of helping the company grow.”
